The breast augmentation surgery or mammoplasty surgery is a surgical intervention that is used to increase the size of the breasts, as well as modify their shape and reposition them wherever each patient wants.
In addition to altering the size and silhouette of the breasts, the size and position of both the areola and the nipple can also be modified in the same mammoplasty procedure. Modifications that affect specific areas of the breasts, which can be carried out without the need to increase or decrease the size of the breasts.
There are currently two types of techniques to achieve breast augmentation. The first and most common is the one that goes through making incisions under the breast, around the areola, or in the axillary area to introduce the breast prosthesis of the size desired by the patient. The area through which the prosthesis will be inserted will vary depending on the type of prosthesis, the size of the prosthesis, as well as the technique used by the mammoplasty surgeon.
The second, which is gaining popularity, is the one that achieves the increase of the breasts by extracting and repositioning fat of the patient herself. During this procedure, fat is removed from an area that is accumulated and then injected into the breasts. The amount of fat that will be used in the operation will vary depending on the increase desired by each patient.
Types of prostheses:
There are different types of breast prostheses. These can be classified according to the filling, the cohesion of the gel that composes them, or the form it acquires.
For example, depending on the filling we find, on the one hand, silicone implants, which are the most recommended since they prevent spilling of the filling in case of breakage, in addition to achieving a natural appearance, both insight, and touch. In addition to these, there are also saline serum implants, which are those made with physiological serum. Being composed of a solution of water and salt, in case of breakage, the body can absorb it completely naturally. Its touch is also the most natural, although slightly harder than silicone.
In addition to their filling, these can also be divided according to the cohesion of the gel they use. It is here that we find those of medium cohesion, somewhat softer to the touch and those of ultra cohesive silicone gel, harder and harder to deform that require a somewhat more invasive operation
Finally, we can also classify them according to their shape by finding round breast implants, the most used worldwide or anatomical or with an oval shape that allows them to achieve much more natural shapes and attract less attention.
Once the type of implant to be placed and the technique to be used to carry out the breast implant are determined, the patient will be summoned to undergo mammoplasty. You will be informed in detail of how the operation will be, as well as the type of incision that will be made to place the implant and how it will evolve.
There are several types of incisions that can be carried out to place breast implants.
The most common is the inframammary incision, in which a small path is opened below the breast from which the prosthesis is inserted. You can also apply a periareolar incision in which an opening is made in the diameter of the areola to later introduce the prosthesis through that area. Finally, it is also possible to make a trans axillary incision to insert the prosthesis through the armpit, which helps to hide the scar.
Usually, the surgeon will recommend one based on the patient. Already in the operating room, after the incision, it will be time to insert the implant submuscular or on the mammary muscle. The area where the implant will be placed will depend, again, on the type of prosthesis, the size of the prosthesis, its physique, and the considerations that the surgeon can make in relation to your specific case.
Once the implant is placed, the incision will be closed either through a few stitches, skin adhesive or surgical tape. It will be then when the postoperative period begins that we can offer more information later.
